2010 Independent Foreign Fiction Prize Shortlist
THE SHORTLIST for the 2010 Independent Foreign Fiction Prize was announced on April 16, 2010. Awarded to an exceptional novel from another language (and which has been translated and published in the U.K.), the award of £10,000 is shared equally between novelist and translator. Here are the shortlisted titles and the names of the authors and translators:
1. Brodeck’s Report (trans. from the French by John Cullen) (MacLehose Press, 2009) / Philippe Claudel
2. The Blind Side of the Heart (trans. from the German by Anthea Bell) (Harvill Secker, 2009/Vintage, 2010) / Julia Franck
3. Fists (trans. from the Italian by Howard Curtis) (Pushkin Press, 2009) / Pietro Grossi
4. Broken Glass (trans. from the French by Helen Stevenson) (Serpent’s Tail, 2009) / Alain Mabanckou
5. The Dark Side of Love (trans. from the German by Anthea Bell) (Arabia Books, 2009) / Rafik Schami
6. Chowringhee (trans. from the Bengali by Arunava Sinha) (Atlantic Books, 2009) / Sankar
Colombian novelist Evelio Rosero’s The Armies (trans. from the Spanish by Anne McLean) won the prize in 2009. The winner of the 2010 prize will be announced on May 13, 2010.
