CHIMAMANDA NGOZI ADICHIE is the winner of the
2007 Orange Prize for Fiction for
Half of a Yellow Sun (Fourth Estate/Harper Perennial, 2006) while
Karen Connelly won the
2007 Orange Award for New Writers for
The Lizard Cage (Harvill Secker/Nan A. Talese, 2007; first published in Canada in 2005), a story that explores and celebrates the resilience of the human spirit in a world of oppression, repression and suppression. At 29,
Adichie is the youngest writer to win the prize for women writers.
Adichie, of course, is the celebrated overall winner of the
2005 Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best First Book with her début novel,
Purple Hibiscus (2003), while
Connelly is the author of
Touch the Dragon: A Thai Journal (published in the U.S. in 2002 as
Dream of a Thousand Lives: A Sojourn in Thailand) (1992), winner of the
1993 Governor General’s Award for Nonfiction.

Both Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Karen Connelly deserve the Oranges. Connelly is a Canadian poet and travel writer who has done very well with her first novel. Congratulations to both!
